I Promise To Always...

ph: tumblr

Eggs and oaths are easily broken - this is probably one of the most used phrases at home, which Mum had drilled in my head since I was a child. She was always trying to warn me about the many aspects of any relationship, the good and the bad, such as, people sometimes make promises they cannot keep, so you should never be too dependent on any one person. Perhaps you'd think that it's a rather sinister thought to be telling a five-year-old, but I'm thankful that Mum warned me of this from an early stage. Because true enough, in my twenty-two years of living, there have been plenty of times people have failed to keep their promises, and vice versa, when I failed to keep mine. From little ones like "I promise to buy you your favourite chocolate" to bigger ones like "I can definitely get you a job". Thanks to Mum, I learn to bounce back up from my disappointments and to (most of the time) make my plan B's.

At my church service today, my pastor asked for us to reflect on a time when a promise somebody kept made a positive impact on our lives. I've been raking my brain, trying to recall at least one specific incident but the human brain seems to always choose to offer up memories of unhappy events first before any happy ones. So, after pacing around the apartment a few times, I eventually remembered a few stories..

Like when my parents made a promise to support me financially and emotionally as they send me overseas to study. If they had not fulfil this promise, I would not have been able to study in Perth with ease and graduate with my degree.

Or the time when P fulfilled his promise to buy me kettle bells so that I can work out at home. It's not a big promise but because he bought me the kettle bells, I was able to lose the couple of extra pounds I put on over the years I've been in Perth and just being healthier overall.

And the most significant event of all was when God promised to fulfil my three wishes in the year 2011 and he did. Without going into too much details of my wishes, one of them was for Him to guide me in my search for a job in Perth and for me to continue staying here and without His divine intervention, I don't believe I'll be here.

Our world would be a lot more different without fulfilled promises. Take the Susan G. Komen for the Cure (formerly known as the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation), the famous pink ribbon foundation, for instance. If founder and CEO Nancy Goodman Brinker had not fulfilled the promise to her sister Susan, who had passed because of breast cancer in 1980, to do everything within her abilities to research a cure for the cancer, there would not be the foundation today.

Every promise made, be it fulfilled or frustrated, will have a certain impact on the people's lives. So what's your story of a promise kept that brought about a positive impact?
x, Chezz
